Brief description

Brief description

This is a mixed IC/people management role for a company building tools to analyze SaaS spend. Think something like "oops forgot to remove the guy who left a year ago from slack" or "didn't turn off that Docker container". SaaS services make a lot from accounts that aren't really doing anything - and thus there's a lot of money to be made in finding those accounts. The mention of AI below isn't spurious; they're using AI to do things for which no public API exists (learning workflows, etc).

The goal is to find someone to lead the technical implementation side of things, but the founder in this case is fairly explicit that he isn't looking for a cofounder. He has a market, has a pretty good idea of what the next thing to build is, and wants technical (but largely not strategic) input on how best to do that. They have an MVP, funding, and revenue (courtesy of a fractional CTO up to this point).

Your responsibilities would start out IC-heavy, and become increasingly people-management heavy over time. "Head of engineering" is basically a compromise title between CTO-minus-the-strategic-responsibilities and IC-founding-engineer, with the role itself lying somewhere between the two.

This role is fully in-office in San Francisco. Their office is located in Cow Hollow, away from the BART lines, so you probably either want to live in (or be willing to move to) SF proper, not just other parts of the Bay Area.

What they're looking for

[Required]

  • 4+ years of engineering experience, ideally 6+

  • Experience as either an engineering manager or a tech lead (you don't have to have done hirings-and-firings before, although you would in this role)

  • Flexible/ok with doing both between IC development and people management. IC-heavy at first, people management to increasing degree later.

  • OK interacting with customers and acting as the technical voice in external discussions (often w/technical stakeholders on the other end)

  • Strong product-first sense: build what customers need, not what is platonically ideal. This is definitely a business-first, not technical-first, company.

[Nice-to-have]

  • Familiar with Go

  • Familiar with React/Typescript

  • Basically pro-AI and eager to experiment with new approaches to using it

What they're offering

What they're offering

  • Salary: $230k (somewhat negotiable)

  • Equity: very substantial, possibly up to cofounder level (3-5%)

  • More residential / activity-friendly area around the office in Cow Hollow than you'd have downtown. For non-Bay-Area residents, this is an area with a lot of food and things to do, and is in walking distance of the Presidio and dockside at Fisherman's Wharf.

  • Usual benefits
