Head of Web Development

Location:

Remote

Distributed (Americas + Europe)

Salary/equity:

$200k-300k

(see text)

Role/industry:

Eng management / front-end-heavy

AI company (but not AI role)

Exp. floor:

3 years (but usually more, see text)

Brief description

This is a fully-remote (w/in-office option, see below) leadership role with a research non-profit working on AI benchmarking and safety. The role itself does not narrowly focus on AI - instead, you'll be running their user-facing presence in the form of e.g. data visualization.

This is not primarily a hands-on coding role, but instead a mix of:

  • Strategic leadership (what should they build, and why? - a "pseudo-cofounder")

  • Technical leadership (architecture + mentorship of more junior engineers)

  • People management (the usual hirings-and-firings stuff)

As is usually the case with an existing company looking for technical leadership, they feel like their existing processes and codebase aren't working, and they're looking for someone opinionated to come in and improve the situation.

Since benchmarking and communication are a lot of what they do, this is an unusually front-end-heavy role for a company doing what they do (e.g. plot.ly).

What they're looking for

[Required]

  • OK working with overlap with both UTC (western Europe) and UTC-8 (North America Pacific time) timezones.

    • In practice, you likely live on a longitude somewhere between San Francisco and London.

  • 3+ YOE at a minimum; ideally 5+

  • 1+ YOE of people management, ideally 2+

  • High proficiency with TS/JS

  • OK with a fast-paced environment with a lot of context-switching.

[Nice to have]

  • Experience with data visualization, particularly plot.ly (but e.g. d3 would still be good)

  • Recent hands-on coding experience.

    • While this won't be your primary responsibility, you should expect to do at least a little.

  • Experience with strategic leadership of a company (either your own or as part of a leadership team at a startup)

  • Some subject-matter knowledge of modern AI.

    • You don't need to be able to e.g. build a chatbot yourself, but you should know how they work.

What they're offering

  • Fully remote role, although they have offices in Berkeley, California

  • Salary: 200k-300k cash

  • Equity: (Unclear, but they're a non-profit so this isn't a looking-for-an-exit situation.)

  • Non-profit company working in an important area

  • Typical benefits (details not given but would usually be health, dental, etc)

  • Two annual company retreats, one in North America and one in Europe.

    • If you live outside the US and don't want to travel to the US due to current events, that is probably not a dealbreaker (they have held the NA meetup in e.g. Mexico before as well).
